If you ordered a downgrade from Windows Vista to Windows XP Professional operating system, your system will be preinstalled with Windows XP Professional operating system. With this configuration, you will receive recovery media for Windows Vista operating system only.
In case you need to restore or recover the Windows XP Professional operating system in the future, it is important that you create recovery media disks for Windows XP Professional operating system after first boot.
When you first apply power to the workstation, the operating system is installed. This process takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Carefully follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. After installation has started, do not turn off the workstation until the process is complete. Turning off the workstation during installation can damage the installation and operation of the software. RestorePlus!
The RestorePlus! process reinstalls the Windows operating system and device drivers (for devices included with the system) to a near-factory state. The process does not back up or recover data on the hard drive. Some application software might not be restored using this process and must be installed from the appropriate application CD.
HP Backup and Recovery Manager (HPBR) Recovery Point.
The HP Backup and Recovery Manager application can be used to capture and restore the contents of the system partition.
It captures a snapshot of the system partition and stores it in a Recovery Point. Everything on the system partition at the time the recovery point was made is saved.
NOTE: HP Backup and Restore is only supported on the HP xw6600 and xw8600 Workstations.
The Recovery Point is saved to the hard drive and can be burned to media for safekeeping.
CAUTION: These methods restore the operating system, but not data. Data must be backed up regularly to avoid loss.

If you cannot create system recovery CDs or DVDs, you can order a recovery disk set from the HP support center.

If you ordered restore media with your workstation, the media is included with your workstation components.
Restoring the operating system
NOTE: Windows Vista provides a backup and restore application as well. To learn more about this application, visit the Microsoft Web site. CAUTION: Before you restore the operating system, back up your data. When you run RestorePlus! from media, the process deletes all information on the primary hard drive, including all partitions.
To restore Windows Vista:
Boot from the RestorePlus! DVD to start the RestorePlus! process. You must start from the RestorePlus! DVD to install device drivers and settings. Follow the prompts to restore your operating system.
Some application software might not be restored using this process. If software is not restored, install it from the appropriate application DVD.

NOTE: The workstation must have a CD or DVD writer installed to create the media set. Creating RestorePlus! media The RestorePlus! kit can be created using the files contained on the hard drive. To create the restore media:
Boot the workstation.
During boot up, an HP Backup and Recovery Manager screen is displayed prompting you to create Recovery CDs or DVDs. Select Now.
An Initial Recovery Point (IRP) of the system is captured. This is a snapshot of the system hard drive. The capture can take more than 10 minutes.
After the IRP is created, you can create a set of backup CDs or DVDs.
To create a RestorePlus! media set including the Windows XP operating system CD, select RestorePlus! > Microsoft Windows XP operating system > Supplemental media.
NOTE: Depending on the options, there might be additional DVDs you can create.
Follow the prompts to create RestorePlus!, operating system, and HPBR media. If you are unable to create CD/DVDs on your workstation, call HP Support and request a RestorePlus! media kit.
Creating HP Backup and Recovery (HPBR) media
NOTE: HPBR functionality is used with Windows XP only. For details, refer to the SoftThinks guide on the Documentation and Diagnostics CD included with the workstation.
The Initial Recovery Point can be burned to optical media and used to recover a system. This section describes making the media.
NOTE: The workstation must have a CD or DVD writer to create the media set.
To create HPBR recovery media:
The Initial Recovery Point (IRP) was captured when the RestorePlus! media set was created previously.
If the IRP was not created, start the HP Backup and Recovery Manager and create recovery points using the Expert mode.
Follow the HPBR online documentation for instructions.
Burn the IRP to media from HPBR.
Select HPBR Start > All Programs > HP Backup & Recovery > HP Backup and Recovery Manager.
Select Next at the first screen.
Select Create recovery CDs or DVDs to recover the system, and then select Next.
Choose Next to display a list of available CD image and the recovery points.
Check the box next to Initial Recovery Point, and then select Next.
Follow the instructions to create the media.
Restoring the operating system
CAUTION: Before you restore the operating system, back up your data. When you run RestorePlus! from media, the process deletes all information on the primary hard drive, including all partitions. If you run RestorePlus! from the recovery partition, only the root (C:) partition is affected.
Using RestorePlus!
To restore with RestorePlus!:
Boot the workstation from the RestorePlus! DVD. You must start from the RestorePlus! DVD for device drivers and settings to be installed.
Follow the prompts to restore the operating system. Some application software might not be restored using this process. If software is not restored,
install it from the appropriate application DVD.
Using HPBR / HP Backup and Recovery media
To restore with the HPBR Initial Recovery Point media:
-Boot the workstation from the Initial Recovery Point media.
-Follow the prompts to restore the system to the state when the IRP was created Using the recovery partition.
A system that shipped with Windows XP includes a recovery partition. You can boot the system from that recovery partition.
From the recovery partition you can perform a system restore using the HPBR Initial Recovery Point, if it was created.
If it was not, you can use a RestorePlus! install.
To restore using the recovery partition:
1) Boot the workstation.
2) When prompted on the boot screen to enter the Recovery Manager, press F11.
NOTE: The opportunity to press F11 during the boot process is small. It comes about the time the F10 prompt appears.
NOTE: To ensure that the recovery processes reinstall on the correct hard drive, do not disconnect the target drive during the recovery process.
Follow the prompts to restore the system to factory-like condition.

de installatie uitschakelt, is het mogelijk dat de besturingssoftware beschadigd raakt of niet op
de goede manier wordt geïnstalleerd.
Opmerking Nadat u tijdens de eerste opstartprocedure van het besturingssysteem een taal
heeft ingesteld, wordt deze taal permanent vastgelegd op de vaste schijf. Als het systeem wordt
hersteld zoekt de herstel-cd naar de taal die op de vaste schijf is vastgelegd en zal alleen de
oorspronkelijke, vooraf geïnstalleerde taal worden hersteld. Indien er een nieuwe vaste schijf is
geïnstalleerd of als er geen taal op de vaste schijf is vastgelegd, kunt u met de herstel-cd elke
gewenste taal installeren. Voor het 64-bits besturingssysteem hoeft u geen taal te selecteren.
Raadpleeg voor uitgebreide instructies voor de installatie en configuratie van het besturingssysteem de
documentatie over het besturingssysteem die is meegeleverd met het werkstation. Nadat u het
besturingssysteem succesvol heeft geïnstalleerd vindt u extra informatie in de online help.
Windows-besturingssysteem herstellen.
U kunt het besturingssysteem Windows XP op verschillende manieren terugzetten naar (bijna) de
fabrieksinstellingen, of de systeeminstellingen naar een van tevoren vastgesteld herstelpunt. De vaste
schijf van uw systeem is voorzien van een herstelpartitie, die software en gegevens bevat waarmee u
het systeem weer grotendeels in de oorspronkelijke staat terug kunt brengen.
Restore Plus! proces
Tijdens de herstelprocedure worden het Windows-besturingssysteem en de stuurprogramma's (voor apparatuur die met het systeem is meegeleverd) automatisch opnieuw geïnstalleerd. Bepaalde applicatiesoftware wordt tijdens deze procedure mogelijk niet hersteld. U kunt deze applicatiesoftware
opnieuw installeren vanaf de oorspronkelijke applicatie-cd. U kunt het Restore Plus! proces uitvoeren vanaf cd, of vanuit de herstelpartitie op uw vaste schijf.
VOORZICHTIG Maak altijd een backup van uw gegevens voordat u het besturingssysteem herstelt. Tijdens deze herstelprocedure gaan alle gegevens in de Windows-partitie verloren. Deherstelpartitie op de systeemschijf en de overige partities blijven echter ongemoeid.
Restore Plus! cd maken
Als u over een cd-recorder beschikt, kunt u zelf herstel-cd's maken. Wanneer u het systeem voor de eerste keer opstart, krijgt u de gelegenheid om cd's voor Restore Plus! en het Windows besturingssysteem te maken, alsmede een extra cd voor HP Backup and Recovery Manager.
(Afhankelijk van de opties die u heeft gekocht, kunt u mogelijk nog andere cd’s maken.) U kunt ook
kiezen voor het alternatief om images van de cd's op een andere locatie op te slaan (bijvoorbeeld een
netwerkschijf), zodat u de cd's op een later tijdstip of vanaf een ander systeem kunt maken.

Herstellen vanaf Restore Plus! cd's
U start het Restore Plus! proces door op te starten vanaf de Restore Plus! cd en de online-instructies zorgvuldig te volgen.
Herstellen vanaf Restore Plus! op de herstelpartitie
U start als volgt het Restore Plus! proces vanuit het menu Emergency Recovery (Noodherstel):
1. Start het werkstation opnieuw op.
2. Druk tijdens het opstartproces op de toets F11 om het menu Emergency Recovery (Noodherstel) weer te geven. Deze prompt verschijnt kort tijdens het opstartproces.
3. Selecteer in het menu Emergency Recovery (Noodherstel) de optie Recover PC's factory installed operating system, drivers, utilities, and applications (Oorspronkelijke installatie van
besturingssysteem, stuurprogramma's, hulpprogramma's en applicaties herstellen) en volg de aanwijzingen op het scherm.
Opmerking Bepaalde applicaties worden tijdens deze procedure mogelijk niet hersteld.
HP Backup and Recovery Manager herstelpunten
HP Backup and Recovery Manager is standaard geïnstalleerd op uw werkstation. Met deze software kunt u een backup maken van uw systeemgegevens en deze herstellen met behulp van een herstelpunt dat een momentopname is van de systeempartitie. U kunt een herstelpunt gebruiken om de systeempartitie terug te zetten naar het punt waarop het herstelpunt werd aangemaakt.
Raadpleeg voor meer informatie over specifieke onderdelen aan de achterzijde de Service and Technical Reference Guide (Referentiegids voor service en technische ondersteuning) van uw
werkstation. Vaste-schijfruimte vrijmaken van de herstelpartitie.
U kunt de herstelpartitie verwijderen om vaste-schijfruimte vrij te maken Als de herstelpartitie is verwijderd, is de functie F11 Emergency Recovery (Noodherstel) niet beschikbaar. U kunt het systeem dan niet meer herstellen vanaf gegevens op de herstelpartitie. Restore Plus ! media in de herstelpartitie zullen worden verwijderd. U kunt dan geen Restore Plus! cd-set meer maken. Als u schijfruimte wilt vrijmaken, kunt u enkel de herstelpartitie verwijderen, of de applicatie HP Backup
and Recovery Manager volledig verwijderen.
U kunt de herstelpartitie verwijderen met behulp van Remove HP Recovery Partition (HP herstelpartitie verwijderen) in de programmamap HP Backup & Recovery. De herstelpartitie wordt
verwijderd, de gebruikerspartitie wordt uitgebreid om ongebruikte vaste-schijfruimte vrij te maken en de opstartprompt voor F11 wordt verwijderd. De applicatie HP Backup and Recovery Manager
blijft op uw systeem aanwezig en kunt u gebruiken om een backup van uw gegevens te maken, of om deze te herstellen.
U kunt de applicatie HP Backup and Recovery Manager verwijderen met behulp van het Windowshulpprogramma Configuratiescherm>Software. De applicatie wordt verwijderd, de
gebruikerspartitie wordt uitgebreid om ongebruikte ruimte vrij te maken en de opstartprompt voor F11 wordt verwijderd. Als u deze applicatie verwijdert, kunt u geen noodherstel meer uitvoeren,
geen backups meer maken van gegevens en uw systeem niet meer herstellen.
