The Zaurus series of PDAs (personal digital assistants) were some of the first devices to truly be considered as “Linux-based”. These were specially popular in Japan and in fact the PDA on offer here appears to come from there since several labels and internals are in Japanese. It is the first Zaurus PDA to include a whooping 6 Gb hard drive :-)

I got this PDA in Germany somewhere between 2006 and 2010, but sadly I do not remember exactly when. I have kept it as best preserved as possible since it has been very special for me.

A German manual is available and included. Original power supply is also there as well as the battery that still works relatively well. I have played quite a lot with the operating system (of course if you are a Linux enthusiast) and the original ‘OpenZaurus’ or something like that distrubution is not longer installed. Instead, some time ago, I installed an ARM version of Arch linux, which is working quite well.

I have removed my normal user ‘felipe’ and left just the user root for you to make any desired changes or even change entirely the OS if you feel inclined to do so. Flashing a different distribution in such PDA is quite involved but there are a lot of tutorials online. I think you can even install OpenBSD if you desire. Some projects to port distrubutions to the Zaurus have been abandoned but some are still available.

Remember, this is an old and not very powerful computer so it is very slow to boot, but once booted and if you do not have anything fancy running it is relatively fast and
